How to Get to Northern Defences (Faster, More Steep) – Gibraltar

There are 2 primary routes to get up the Northern defences, one is shorter and steeper, the other is less steep but slightly longer.

This page details the fast and steep route. If you’d prefer the shallower but slightly longer version then please click here.

The defences are UNLIT inside and some sections are pitch black. You WILL need a torch (phone torch will do in a pinch but real torch preferred).

Directions

1. Start at Casemates Square

Starting at Casemates square head towards Main Street. Directly opposite the ICC Shopping centre take a sharp left up and walk up the hill.

At the start of Main Street proceed uphill at the first sharp left (almost going back on yourself).

2. Go onto Demaya’s Ramp

Halfway up the road turn right onto Demaya’s ramp stairs.

3. Take the Right Stairs

Demaya’s ramp leads you to a fork in the stairs. Take the right side.

4. Turn Left at Top of Stairs

Turn left at the top of the stairs. (Right will take you back to midtown).

5. You’ve Arrived at Northern Defences!

At the end of the road walk straight ahead to the start of the Northern defences. You will be starting at the lower lines, comprised of the Kings and Queens galleries, amongst other chambers and rooms.

Northern Defences start dead ahead. To your left is Casemates square and Land Port city entrance (formerly the only way to walk into Gib)
Left takes you to the King and Queens Galleries, right takes onwards and upwards!
